Just to be clear, you can add or avoid adding hair whenever you want or need to. These are not hard rules, it’s just advice based on our experience and it may take experimentation for you to understand when a situation calls for one or the other.
• Afro vs. non-Afro
Just to be clear, adding extra hair into Afro Hair is far easier to incorporate than doing the same with straight or non-Afro Hair. Therefore I’m much more comfortable adding extra hair into an Afro Dreadlock. We strive to avoid adding extra hair whenever possible, but if it’s necessary we always recommend adding Virgin hair.
• Adding Extra Hair
Situations that call for adding extra hair are usually when the dreadlocks are aged and more difficult to crochet. If the dreadlocks are thinning at their core and they’re old and mature, it’s hard to do much work on. But, in some cases, especially with Afro Hair, you can add Virgin hair to the core and crochet it into the existing dreadlock. Not only will this thicken the dreadlock, it will also strengthen it if you do it right.
• NOT Adding Extra Hair
Situations that DO NOT usually require adding extra hair to the core is when the dreadlock is young or soft. If the hair is loose enough it can be crocheted in a way that thickens and strengthens the core of the dreadlock. This is the best case scenario and one of the things we will be covering in the Hands On portion of this course.
