• Hair MUST be clean and dry
The hair should be completely clean, dry, and product free for a best case scenario, especially if you’ll be crocheting the hair as well. If you’re ONLY backcombing the hair and not crocheting you can get away with a lot more.
• Some natural oil can be ok sometimes
I’ve had appointments with clients that have oily hair and it usually works out ok. However, in these situations it seems to be more likely to result in less control and more loops later on.
• Definitely no conditioning products
Low levels of natural oil produced by the scalp can work out ok, but the client should NOT have any conditioner in their hair at all. We always tell clients to not use conditioner for their last wash before our appointment for an installation.
• With that being said it should still be tangle free
Some hair textures are almost impossible to remove tangles without a conditioner, if that’s the case I still prefer to work with the tangles rather than work with conditioned hair. The tangles can be an annoyance, but dealing with slippery and conditioned hair is worse in my opinion.
