• Plastic combs just don’t cut it, especially for thick hair
Plastic combs usually don’t have what it takes to hold up against backcombing for dreadlocks for new trainees. Even metal combs can’t hold up sometimes. We never use plastic combs for backcombing.
• We use “flea combs” or “pet combs” with metal teeth
Combs with strong metal teeth certainly work best, especially for new trainees. These are the only combs we use.
• If you’re bending teeth you’re doing it wrong
If you’re bending the teeth of a metal comb don’t be discouraged, most new trainees bend teeth in the beginning. It’s something you work through. It’s good to have at least one backup comb for this reason. If you are bending teeth it’s most likely because you’re not bringing the hair all the way into the teeth of the comb. You’re pushing the hair from the tip of the teeth. You’ll want to make sure the hair goes all the way to the base of the teeth of the comb.
