• Hair Length makes all the difference in the world
Trying to attach or reattach anything to hair that is too short will be more difficult and yield less ideal results. It’s harder to determine the size to make the section and the dreadlock on the clients head if the hair is short. This usually results in more of a bulge at the connection as well, resulting in a less “seamless” connection.
• Partially determined by size of sections
Generally speaking the larger the section, the longer the hair must be. The smaller the section, the shorter the hair can be.
• Straight Hair
For Non-Afro Hair that is Straight or Curly, 3-5″ is the minimum length and 5-10″ is the ideal length. The only time I would consider 3″ or 4″ as acceptable is if the extensions or reattachments have a medium to smaller diameter. If working with thicker extensions I absolutely prefer 5″ or longer.
• Afro Hair
For Afro Hair 2-3″ minimum length we require and 3-5″ is our ideal length. The same principle applies, for skinnier locs 2-3″ will work, but for hair that isn’t as healthy or for thicker dreadlocks, a longer length around 3-5″ is often necessary.
• Pushy and Impatient Clients
Sometimes clients will be impatient and push to book an appointment before their hair is long enough. In these cases I simply insist for longer length just to ensure the quality of the attachment is my high standards to ensure high quality and customer satisfaction. I’d much rather have the hair be longer than necessary rather than shorter than necessary. And I’d rather lose the client, than have them complaining because the attachments weren’t done perfectly because their hair was too short.
