You can access all of these tools on our Tools Page here.
• 0.6mm Crochet Hook (required)
This will be the hook you start out with.
• 0.5mm (optional)
If you buy the 3 pack (single, double, and triple hook pack) you won’t need an additional 0.5mm hook. This certainly isn’t necessary. However it’s great to have as a backup.
• Thread Pic Crochet Hook (required)
Our primary tool – this hook is sharper and more precise, therefore we don’t start training with it immediately. On the other hand, it is easier to pull the hook through the dreadlock, so it can be easier for the trainee to be more effective with this hook when starting out.
• Bulk Afro Hair (required)
This is by far the easiest hair to start learning with. Even if you have stick straight Asian hair, you should learn with this hair first. We start all of our trainees with this hair by default.
• Double and Triple hooks (optional)
These hooks are not for beginners, therefore we save it for last. They’re also optional, however they dramatically speed up the process for installations. If you’re only taking these courses for maintenance you can omit these tools since they will not be applicable for maintenance.
• Straight Human Hair (optional)
This is only required if you intend to work with non-Afro hair. If you’re taking these courses specifically for your own hair we would recommend purchasing virgin hair that matches your hair texture as closely as possible. You can typically walk into a local hair supply store and tell the person behind the counter what you’re looking for and they should be able to help you out. If you buy virgin hair just be prepared for a steep price tag.
If you buy synthetic hair or “silky” human hair, be prepared for a challenge. That type of hair is very difficult to backcomb and crochet, however it does make for really good practice.
• Extension holder from previous courses (required)
Having an attachment point for the dreadlocks you’ll be creating really helps to emulate a dreadlock attached to a human head.
