Hair LOVES to knot up when it is very clean, product free, and completely dry.
For this reason we ALWAYS recommend a very thorough wash or deep cleanse 24-48 hours before any work is done. By working with clean hair that is 100% dry you will have a situation where your hair will be the easiest to knot up, and the knots will hold much more effectively.
I’ve seen salons tout that they offer the Crochet Method or Instant Locs method, and then see their work on social media and they’re crocheting hair that is heavily lubricated with products. It seems like these types of salons are only using these words as a marketing tool without actually understanding the method properly.
We will be developing our own shampoo, but we also have other recommendations – links in the description below. And you can visit our Deep Cleanse guide as well.
When you want to remove knots typically you’ll use a conditioner.
Conditioners are not cleansing, they are moisturizing and lubricating, therefore anything that acts similar to a conditioner is highly likely to slow down the locking process by inhibiting knots from forming or allowing established knots to “slip out” and loosen your dreadlocks.
Of course the hair and scalp should be pH balanced and/or moisturized, however that should always be done AFTER your work is done.
